Edoardo Miroglio History

Grape-growing and wine-making have been traditional for the region ever since Thracian times. Many ancient authors have praised the Thracian wine, and the recipe has been passed from father to son for generations.

The origins of winegrowing in Thrace (modern day Bulgaria) date back so far in time that its roots are mythological. Wine was therefore a central element in the life of Thracians, a sort of divine drink through which they could reach ecstasy and communicate with the Divine. They drank wine before going into war, to dance, to find inspiration, and to enjoy freedom.

It is also thought that some native varieties, such as Mavrud and Melnick, one of Winston Churchill’s favourite wines, were already grown on the hills of southern Bulgaria more than 5000 years ago.

In 2002 Edoardo Miroglio, a well-known Italian textile and wine producer, discovered in the Thracian region of Bulgaria the perfect soil and climatic conditions for production of quality wines in the village of Elenovo on 22 km. Southeast from Nova Zagora.

With the idea to combine the Italian know-how in the development of vineyards and oenology with the excellent Piedmontese tradition, the winery conducted its first production in October 2005. The overall process for the production of wines is controlled by a group of Italian and Bulgarian oenologists led by the world's famous oenologist Marco Monchiero.

As of the present moment, on the extremely suitable soil of Elenovo, over 220 hectares of vineyards of elite French and Bulgarian grape varieties have been planted.
